SHRP CAREER EXCHANGE ROUNDTBLE:
“Emotional Intelligence and Its Impact on Your Growth”
March 16, 2006, Fidelity Investments, One North LaSalle Ste 100, Chicago, IL
Michael Thompson and Robert Gramillano will set the stage for a lively discussion on the benefits of developing Emotional Intelligence (EI). Decisions related to our careers are not based on analytical data only. It is a fact that the power of our emotions and the emotions of others will influence our careers and will help determine our future. Often times emotions, such as our passion for a subject or industry, our dislike for a boss or a teacher, our relationships with co-workers and acquaintances play obvious and/or hidden roles in our decision making. Emotional Intelligence is a learned skill that can be used in every situation.
Effective development of Emotional Intelligence skills will enhance personal effectiveness in the workplace. Improved networking and leadership skills are just two examples where the use of Emotional Intelligence is essential. Emotional Intelligence is measured using five competencies; these will be explained and examples will be used that are taken from the every day experience of an HR professional.
The competencies are:
- Understanding your emotions and learning to express them appropriately,
- Understanding other’s emotions,
- Balancing emotions, intuition and logic in making cognitive decisions,
· Managing emotions in teams or with colleagues, and
· Maintaining emotional control in the workplace.
